Parents please read May 14 letter from principal Linda Miller regarding a situation that happened before school
May 14, 2009
Dear Rockwood South Middle School Parent/Guardian:
I want to make you aware of a situation that occurred before school this morning. A student brought
a BB gun to school and showed it to some students who were in the gym waiting to go to home
room. At approximately 7:10 a.m., the student fired the BB gun, randomly striking three different
students who were seated in the gym bleachers. This particular BB gun uses plastic pellets.
Fortunately, none of the students were seriously injured. All three were examined by the school
nurse and went on to class. Parents of these students were contacted.
Students are supervised in the gym before school by teachers and administrators. We have
identified the student who had the BB gun, and we have secured the weapon. The St. Louis
County Police Department has been contacted. We are continuing to investigate, in cooperation
with the police department and with the assistance of our school resource officer.
The student involved in the incident will be disciplined in accordance with the policies and
procedures of the Rockwood School District and the laws of the state of Missouri. I want to assure
you this is unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated. Our first priority is always the safety
and security of all students and staff.
The majority of RSMS students were unaware of this incident that happened before school. If your
child expresses a need to talk about this incident after learning about it, please know that our
school counselors and teachers are available.
If you have any questions about what happened, please don’t hesitate to call me.
Sincerely,
Linda Miller
Principal
