Charter Communications to launch EPIX

St Louis MO - Charter Communications said Thursday it plans to launch EPIX, a television, video-on-demand and online service, in May.

Terms of the agreement between Charter and EPIX, a premium movie channel, were not disclosed.

The pay TV channel was launched in October by Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), its Paramount Pictures unit, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF).

Through its distribution partnerships, EPIX will be available for consumers in nearly 16 million homes by May, Charter said.

EPIX, led by President Mark Greenberg, is also has deals with Cox Communications and Mediacom Communications.

Last month, Charter President and Chief Executive Neil Smit, the highest-paid executive in St Louis MO, announced plans to leave the company at the end of February to oversee cable operations at Comcast Corp., the nation’s largest cable operator. His replacement hasn’t been named.
